Beating the opposition in Google?

By Jonathon Perino of Avid Tech DVD Transfer Centre

After 4 years on the net it is finally gratifying to own number 1 and number 2 slots on google.com.au in the film and video transfer industry of Australia.

Experience and learning over a long period has helped our business to prosper and become the largest retail video and film transfer facility in our home state of Victoria.

In the early days all the gurus said get links, any links to obtain a torrent of traffic, not so.

Finding relevant link partners has been difficult and a lot has been learned to the extent that we use various methods of link building without exchanging any links at all.

These days it is social bookmarking and blogs that provide our large traffic streams.

Many people hate begging for links and just don't do it well or with any focus at all. The key today is relevance for the search engine marketing projects that require a lot of thinking about keywords and being aware of what the top sites are doing correctly or well enough to dominate the top 5 spots in google.com.au.

We "Twitter", dig, furl and only-wire as a samll sample of the range. Squidoo has been a good help for our internet marketing
strategy.

Creating a squidoo "Lens" won't take you long and if you can write reasonably well you can aquire a following of friends to help promote your lens and websites.

The other thing that really matters is content and most of us do not get there with all the relevance you need or how to vertical stack content in the content pages or interlinking within the site itself.

We have been around for long enough now to learn a thing or two about SEO & SEM based on our results. Hard work and a ton of learning plus some really neat tools to help automate much of the Web 2.0 submissions and bookmarks.

So yes it is possible to beat the number 1 site, but to be number 1 in google means a lot of work.

Not all links are any good and the only good back link is one that has traffic.

Plan and stick to the plan and do not become discouraged.

Time and diligence plus a real commitment to your online business is a must if you want that top spot in google you will have to do things better than the top ranking sites in the search engines.
